Transport Minister Peter Dunne has announced plans to introduce the first truck refrigerating unit in the country in the coming weeks.
The announcement comes after Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the Government was committed to delivering a national truck refrigerate system.
Mr Constance told the ABC he would introduce the unit at the end of this year and said the equipment would be delivered by the end at the earliest.
“The unit will be delivered to the National Motorway Commission by the middle of March,” he said.
“It will be designed to accommodate trucks of up to 300 tonnes and will have two or three compartments and an extension of six compartments.”
We’re not saying that it’s going to be a fleet of six trucks.
But we’re talking about a system where trucks of 300 tonnes will be able to be transported safely and efficiently.
“The Government has been pushing to increase the supply of refrigeration and diesel fuel to the nation’s roads and rail networks after the closure of Victoria’s Victorian Metro network due to a coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Dunne said he would be introducing a new fuel price support scheme in the next two months.”
In Victoria, there is a fuel price subsidy scheme for diesel fuel, which is the largest in the world, and we’ve introduced that subsidy scheme,” he told the National Press Club.”
If you can get rid of the diesel subsidy, then the subsidy will be extended to trucks of 400 tonnes and up to 800 tonnes.
“He said the scheme would be rolled out across the country.
Mr Newlands said the new refrigeration units would be made up of two or more refrigerators that would be separated by a glass partition, which would be closed at all times.”
Each unit will have a door, a floor, a ceiling and some ventilation and air conditioning,” he explained.”
You’ll also be able see the gas cylinders and the pipes and the insulation of the doors.
“Mr Newland said the units would also be equipped with air conditioning systems and the fuel tanks would be fitted with gas pressure regulators.”
They’ll also have an automatic heating system,” he added.”
There’s also a generator that will provide a backup.
“Mr Dunn said the refrigeration systems would be designed and manufactured by a national manufacturer.”
What this is all about is that we can have a national system where the truck can have refrigeration for the next generation, and the truck truck can then use that refrigeration to power the whole system,” Mr Dunne explained.
He said he was confident the new units would have the support of the public and the Government.”
I think the public understand what refrigeration is and what it’s meant to be,” Mr Newlands explained.
